Red Waterproof filter bag protection for gas mask WWI.  I owned and sold a couple WWI gas masks that had this type of bag on the filter. I do not think they were issued that way. The soldiers may have protected them that way while in the field in wet conditions.

Still flexible and with that early red rubber lining, it has a bit of drying. Nice early mustard yellow color outside.
